The preparations

In short, there are several methods and, in my opinion, the most effective (but not the least expensive) is to use a bike shop floor such as the model 500 B’Twin (maximum load 20 kg) of j use regularly for my road bike and mountain bike.

There are models of excellent qualities of the brand Park Tool very famous with the PCS-10 workshop foot that will accept without problem the road bikes and even VAE mountain bikes that exceed 22 kg!

I use a workshop stand for several reasons:

go around the bike easily
adjust the derailleurs by turning the pedals with one hand and adjusting the other without problem

The workshop stand is a bike stand that is equipped with a jaw that will keep your bike at the seat post and allows me to clean my precious without leaning, it is the high end to clean and maintain his bike.

If you have a bike size XS (like my girlfriend) and the seat post is too short, the jaw also works horizontally by tilting!

In this way, you can hang all possible bikes just like children’s bikes!

If you do not have the space or the need to buy this type of equipment, in this case, I place the bike upside down, letting it rest on the handlebars and the saddle (protect these elements well with a piece of cardboard or fabric to avoid scratching these elements with the ground).
If you are an expert in the field, you can even disassemble the wheels, which will facilitate further cleaning.

I specify that it is not mandatory to use to return his bike and that everything can be achieved with the bike on its wheels and the place!

The magic products that I use
As a reminder, I use my road bike to work in the Paris region so it is subject to the vagaries of time with rain, roads and paths following the outputs.
I try to wash the bike at least twice a month, but sometimes more often, for example when the chain of the bike begins to creak every turn of the pedal after storms under which I drove for 2 hours who have been stripping the transmission !

Here are the maintenance products for my bike that I use to clean my bike without spending hours there:

a brush for the cassette and the chain

The first essential step: cleaning
The first step in proper maintenance is undoubtedly proper cleaning.

Personally, I use a 100% biodegradable cleaner because the liquid leaves in the soil when you rinse your bike so try to limit the environmental impact.
In addition, the spray spray is really ideal to access all components of the bike quickly.

I spray everywhere:

the framework
the fork
handlebars
the pedals
all the transmission with the cassette, the chain, the derailleurs

The big advantage of this cleaner is that it is provided for all the bike including transmission and brakes, so you do not need to perform the step of degreasing if the cassette is not too dirty!

The Muc-Off cleaner is allowed to react for 3 to 5 minutes (according to the manufacturer’s instructions).

Sometimes, if the cassette accumulates too much dirt (which interferes with shifting or creaks the chain) so I use a degreaser if necessary to complete the maintenance of the transmission of the bike.

Regarding the saddle, if it is not waterproof, a small waterproof bag on it will protect it.

To clean the pedals, brakes, or spokes, prefer the use of a toothbrush standby that will allow access to every nook and cranny to remove accumulated dust.

And if the transmission is clean, no need to degrease!

It only remains to rinse and no need for a karcher, a single jet of water is enough and avoids damaging the bike bearings by injecting water inside (I never had the case but I do not prefer to try).

For efficient transmission maintenance: degreasing
The transmission gets dirty because the current lubricant that protects the chain is like a glue that will catch all the dust that is on the road.

If you drive with an uncleaned transmission, you’ll hear louder and louder as you pedal, which is a sign that it’s time to clean up!

For my part, if I have not cleaned the bike for weeks, then the transmission is completely covered with dirt that can go up to me to blow the speeds.
Being equipped with 11 speeds in the back, the chain is very fine so the dirt made it quickly deviate from its axis.

I use a degreasing product (see photo below) but I just discovered that Muc-off has also released a biodegradable degreaser, and I will order because I find it very good that we can clean his bike in remaining concerned about the planet. ?
Otherwise there are other brands such as the WD-40 Bike.

The use of a degreaser is economical to clean the transmission because it is used only for this function so the amount used is lower and you will be able to clean more than ten times your bike.

You can try cleaning your transmission with dishwashing liquid as you can do during the previous cleaning step, but having tested many times, it works poorly because the lubricant on the chain is designed to resist water.

For the smallest and hard-to-reach places, an old toothbrush can do the trick, or invest in a complete Muc-Off kit for example, which contains that contains several types of abrasion-resistant brushes.

The principal will then remain to arm you with a good elbow grease for 5 minutes!

If your transmission is relatively clean:

spray the cleaner

If the transmission is very dirty and the cleaner does not take off everything, in this case, it is necessary to degrease by adding a step:

spray the cleaner
let stand for 3 to 5 minutes without being in direct sunlight (manufacturer’s instructions)
degreasing on the chain, the derailleurs and the cassette
rub with a sponge or toothbrush all over
rinse with water
dry with fabric and in the sun
If there is sun and a little wind, the bike will quickly dry. Feel free to go for a few minutes.

Some even use an air compressor to blow completely on the bike and thus hunt water without a trace.

Regular lubrication, essential to the longevity of your bike
The last step is to grease correctly, and regularly, all the elements that make up the transmission of your bike.
This avoids the premature wear of the chain and continues to maintain the silent transmission, moreover, the shift is greatly facilitated.

Again, on the side of available products, you are spoiled for choice. Note however that, ideally, it will be necessary to favor the use of grease, often in the form of paste, for the maintenance of mechanical assemblies (seat tube, stem, ..), while the oil will concern more the transmission elements, ie the moving parts.
