Technical terms of mechanics for beginners

The same goes for mechanics as for cooking: the knowledge of technical terms is essential to understand the operation to be performed. Here are the ten essential words you need to know before you start!

Technical terms of mechanics for beginners

  • Lockheed: brake fluid

This word often used in repair and maintenance manuals refers to the brake fluid.

This incompressible liquid ensures the transmission of the movement of the brake pedal to the stirrups and jaws. It is important that its level is always close to the “max” mark.

Good to know: a soft brake pedal should prompt you to check the level of the Lockheed. The location of the jar is indicated in the manual of your car.

  • The breech

This is the part located above the engine that comes to cap the latter over its entire width.

This piece is infamous because of failures of its seal, the cylinder head gasket, whose rupture causes significant water leaks and is very expensive to change.

  •  The candles

Here we have to distinguish between petrol engines and diesel engines because candles are very different and do not fulfill the same role at all.

In the case of a petrol engine, the candles, most often four in number, cause a spark. This allows the mixture air/gasoline to ignite, which produces an explosion and therefore gases, which, compressed, ensure the movement of the engine. That’s why we talk about an explosion engine.
In the case of a diesel engine, it is called glow plugs. They act as a resistor that warms the engine during the preheating phase (when the orange coil is lit on the dashboard).
Note: the condition of the spark plugs on a gasoline engine is very important, and in particular affects the consumption and the proper functioning of the engine. They are to change every 30,000 kilometers.

  • The spars

Ouch, your car has received a major shock and the insurance expert report tells you that the spars are affected? The rails, kind of large iron bars, are arranged on both sides of the chassis, under the car, and ensure the rigidity of the entire vehicle.

When they are twisted by shock, the repair can be so expensive that the vehicle is declared economically irreparable, especially if it is old.

  • The gimbals

There are two, one on the left and one on the right, the universal joints ensure the transmission of the movement of the engine to the front wheels while allowing them to be able to be pointed.

Good to know: if the car is “clac clac” in turns, it is necessary to quickly check the condition of the gimbals. Their breaking at high speed can be dangerous.

  • A key chain or strap

It is an essential tool to maintain your car. This key, consisting of a long handle and a chain or an adjustable strap, allows disassembling the oil filter during a complete emptying.

It can be bought for a handful of euros in any car center.

Good to know: The strap wrench is never used to tighten the oil filter, as it may not be removable afterwards. A good hand tightening is enough.

  • Brake pads

Brake pads are very hard pieces of metal coated with a kind of carbon called ferrodo. Two in number per wheel, they ensure the pinching of another piece of metal linked to the wheel, called disc, and thus the slowing of the rotation of the wheel.

Note: Most vehicles have a brake pad wear indicator on the dashboard. During braking, this must come on if the pads are at the end of their life. But it happens quite frequently that the thread of this witness, located behind the wheel, cuts, preventing the ignition of the famous witness. Regular visual inspection of the condition of the pads is recommended, especially if the vehicle is used in the city.
